Wet Mine Baldwin LSide.jpg - WET MINE BALDWIN - Rare brass wet mine Baldwin cap lamp, early version ca. 1909, bent steel flat reflector with oblong steel wire loop retainer soldered to front of tank to hold reflector and a flat brass washer around the burner tube, base unmarked, top marked in larger letters THE BALDWIN LAMP PAT AUG 28 1900 PAT MAY 22 1906 OTHERS PENDING, inset single thickness water door, brass screen felt retainer, ex-Steve Loftin collection (The Baldwin model No. 33 lamp equipped with a bent rectangular steel reflector to protect the flame in wet mines was advertised as early as 1908 through the early teens. The lamp shown with the steel wire loop to secure the reflector is the earliest version of thewet mine lamp. A later version ca. 1912 includes a bent rectangular push-on reflector that does away with the wire loop. See Thorpe, Carbide Light - The Last Flame in American Mines, pp 24-30 and pp 40-41)
